Happy Tails!
Bones is a young Boxer mix, with a true story of survival. His "owner" dumped him on Hwy. 18. It appears that he has been hit by a car, his right rear leg is broken in several places. He was left for dead, and it is nothing short of a miracle that he has survived. We don't know how long he lived in the tall brush on the side of the hwy, but it had to be at LEAST a week or more. No food, No water, No medical attention and we have been having triple digit temperatures.
On Aug. 25, 2010, we were notified of a dog living in the bushes on a very fast and dangerous blind corner of Hwy 18. A kind hearted gentleman attempted to rescue him, but Bones growled and snapped at him. Three Dog Bakery owner Jessica Menell heard about the situation and asked our advice (which was to win his trust with food).
On Aug. 26, 2010, Jessica and Terry Marshall went to look for Bones with hot dogs in hand. At first Bones was again growling, but after a few tosses of food, he realized that not ALL people are bad people. Soon, he was on his way to the vet office.
After his examination, he was determined to be about 1 yr. old. He was over 20lbs underweight and it is estimated that he'd been in the brush for at least a week. Unfortunately, with the combination of so many breaks to his rear right leg, along with the time lapse of medical attention, his leg cannot be repaired and will be amputated.
Bones had his amputation on Monday, 8/30/10 and the vet office says he is doing well. He has some drainage of the wound, so he is staying in the hospital for a few extra days.
Bones was released from the Hospital on Friday, 9/3/10. He still has a little bit of bleeding from his wound, and he is being treated for tape worms, but he is doing great. He is a VERY strong boy; pulls hard on the leash!
Sept. 7th update: Unfortunately Bones is back at the vet. His wound continues to bleed, so his foster dad took him back in to check it. He will need another surgery to go in and see what's going on. Poor baby!!
Sept. 10th update: The vet office reports that Bones is doing fantastic! It was granulation tissue from the surgery site that had to be corrected. He's not quite ready for release yet, but is doing great.
Sept. 11th update: Bones is back home with his foster family and he is doing AWESOME! He was SO excited to be back home, that he jumped up on one family member and balanced on his one leg perfectly. His surgery wound looks 100% better!
Sept. 13th update: Bones is doing so well, you'd hardly know he is missing a leg. He pulls so hard on the leash; he is definitely going to need basic obedience classes once he is healed!
Sept. 15th update: Bones has slight drainage and bleeding, swelling and discoloration around the wound. Soon after his foster mom called for an appt. at the vet, that swelling/discoloration went away. But he's going in anyways. Foster family thinks that he has been rubbing the wound with his cone during the night and this is irritating it. Here's an updated photo. Cone taken off for the photo only, otherwise it's always on him!
Sept. 17th update: His name should be RASCAL. He has figured out how to maneuver his cone around to get to his wound (at night while the watch guards are asleep). In this process, he managed to rub the skin around his incision raw and get it infected. He pretty much made his own incision now. SO...trying to keep one step ahead of this determined boy; we have wrapped the edging of his cone with duct tape, he wears a pair of "HANES" at night, the cone is now woven in to his collar and we have a "no bite" collar on order for him.
Sept. 22nd update: Bones got his staples out today! His surgery site is still a little tender, so he will keep the cone on for a few more days just to be sure, but his big announcement is he will be attending our Strut your Mutt event this Sunday at Lake Gregory!! If you would like to meet Bones, come by and give him a pat on the head!!
Sept. 23rd update: Bones is sporting a new collar these days!
